Between the ocean and the river
Melbourne Beach
A small town on the barrier island, with the Atlantic on one side and the Indian River on the other. The land is narrow here, and you are never far from either shore.
Homes run from old beach cottages to newer houses near the dunes, and very little stands tall. An old wooden pier reaches out into the river. South of town the beach is a nesting ground for sea turtles, and from May through October lights near the sand stay low.
