Leak or burst pipe: Do this right now

  1. Close the main shut-offIt’s usually outside, where the pipe comes up near the front of the house, or in the garage. Lever: a quarter turn, until it crosses the pipe. Round handle: clockwise until it stops.
  2. Turn off the water heaterElectric: switch off its breaker. Gas: turn the dial to pilot.
  3. Stay away from wet outletsIf water is near outlets, cords or the electric panel, keep out of that room.

Find your shut-off today

The day a pipe bursts is a bad day to start looking.

  1. Find itMost Florida homes have it outside, where the pipe comes up near the front wall, or in the garage near the water heater.
  2. Try itTurn it off, then back on. If it’s stuck, don’t force it. Replacing a stuck valve is a small job.
  3. Mark itTie a bright tag on it and show everyone at home.
Open
Lever runs with the pipe. Water on.
Closed
Lever crosses the pipe. Water off.

Round handleTurn it clockwise until it stops.

There’s also a valve in the meter box by the street. It belongs to the water company and may need a special tool.
